BURSA MALAYSIA INTER-VARSITY STOCK CHALLENGE 2023 CONCLUDES WITH MUCH SUCCESS
Bursa Malaysia Berhad (“Bursa Malaysia” or the “Exchange”), today announced the successful conclusion of the Bursa Inter-Varsity Stock Challenge 2023. The Bursa Inter-Varsity Stock Challenge is part of the Exchange’s ongoing commitment to foster a new generation of informed, confident investors through practical, hands-on experience on stock trading.
The three-month virtual stock trading competition witnessed participation from 943 teams, comprising 1,437 university students across Malaysia[1] - a notable increase of 29% in the number of teams and 21% in the number of students that participated, compared to last year. This rise reflects the growing interest and enthusiasm in the stock market among the youth.
“This stock challenge provided students with opportunities to gain practical experience to understand and learn the intricacies of trading on the stock market. Bursa Malaysia will continue to inspire young adults to learn about investing and entering the stock market in an informed manner via such competitions going forward,” said Datuk Muhamad Umar Swift, Chief Executive Officer of Bursa Malaysia.
Using a real-time price feed, the stock challenge was designed to challenge university students to create the most profitable securities portfolio. To facilitate this, each team was allocated a virtual startup capital of RM100,000 and received mentorship from partner brokers including Affin Hwang Investment Bank Berhad, AmInvestment Bank Berhad, CGS-CIMB Securities Sdn Bhd, Public Investment Bank Berhad, and RHB Investment Bank Berhad. These brokers not only provided participants with access to all relevant research reports and analytics, but also coached the participants on various trading strategies.
In a striking display of skill and market acumen, Team ACG4w4 from Universiti Sains Malaysia emerged as a champion, tremendously multiplying their virtual investment capital of RM100,000 by more than 52 times, growing to a virtual portfolio value of over RM5.2 million. This achievement exemplifies the profound educational impact and practical experience offered by the competition.
