CHARITABLE MERITS OF COOKING AND SHARING
Bursa Malaysia’s staff recently donned aprons, swapped their office gear for “ladles and spatulas” before going beyond the call of duty to raise funds for charity through a “cookout” session. The event, named as “The Great Cookout” was put together in line with the organisation’s corporate social responsibility programme planned for this year.
The session eventually raised a total of RM12,150 in three short hours, thanks to the hard work and effort of Bursa Malaysia’s management and staff who had been egging themselves on to do something they could be proud of in the name of charity.
The amount generated from the event will be donated to several non-profit and charitable organisations in the Klang Valley comprising welfare homes (Good Samaritan Homes, Rumah Kebajikan Karunai Illam, Persatuan Al Fikrah, Positive Shelter Home and Persatuan Kebajikan Al Hidayah), soup kitchens (Pertiwi and Kechara) and hospital (pediatric ward, University Malaya Medical Centre).
Bursa Malaysia Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Tajuddin Atan was impressed with the cohesiveness and commitment displayed by the participants, said, “There is always a greater cause a corporate citizen like Bursa Malaysia can be a part of and by contributing the way we did with this event, our staff’s morale was greatly uplifted. All they wanted was to show they cared by giving back to the society.”
The event started at 11.00 am and attracted participation from seven of the organisation’s business units, namely Securities Market, Bursa Malaysia Derivatives, Regulation, Corporate Services, Market Operations, Technology System and CEO’s Office. A “friendly-competitive spirit” that prevailed among the teams leading up to the event saw them sparing no effort to piece together stall presentations and food and beverage offerings that bespoke their dedication to this cause.
The session was held at the building’s lower ground lobby and podium car park, and the areas were adequately spiffed up for the occasion. The adjoining car park hosted most of the action - bedecked with canopies in red and blue (corporate colours of Bursa Malaysia) – it delivered the most ideal environment for the teams to showcase their creative and delicious offerings.
The bevy of food and beverage offered at the stalls which comprised local favourites, western treats and self-created combinations were clearly a sight of to behold, a smell and taste to revel in. Each team had something different to say, taking on a different theme such as “Great Malaysian BBQ”, “Propa Gangnam”, “MO Pirates” and “Wild Wild West” as a “marketing strategy” to “lure unsuspecting customers.”
Bursa Malaysia’s management committee also joined in the merry making, rolling up their sleeves to prepare and serve up the delicacies, to the delight and appreciation of the staff and customers. Within a matter of hours, the food had sold out, with customers even streaming in from nearby and adjoining buildings/companies.
The cookout session is part of a larger plan that will see Bursa Malaysia staff work with various charitable and non-profit organisations in the near future. The plans will involve distributing food to homeless people, donation drives and collection of used items, visiting underprivileged shelters, homes, orphanages, pediatric wards and performing community services.
