CAPITAL MARKET LEADERS GO LIVE WITH INVESTORS ACROSS THE WORLD
INVEST MALAYSIA TRADITION CONTINUES VIRTUALLY WITH A MISSION TO RECOVER, ADVANCE AND SUSTAIN
Kuala Lumpur, 7 July 2020 – Bursa Malaysia Berhad (“Bursa Malaysia”) today set the tone of the 16th instalment of Invest Malaysia. Invest Malaysia Virtual Series 1: Economic Recovery - Policies and Opportunities held in collaboration with Maybank was broadcasted to over 1,000 virtually connected capital market investors around the world. Also for the first time, retail investors were invited to be part of the nation’s preeminent capital market conversation through live streaming of selected sessions on Bursa Marketplace’s Facebook page.
Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar opened Invest Malaysia 2020 in his newly appointed role as Chairman of Bursa Malaysia. The guest-of-honour for this year’s capital market conversation was YB Senator Tengku Dato’ Sri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, Minister of Finance Malaysia, who delivered the keynote address.
Datuk Muhamad Umar Swift, Chief Executive Officer of Bursa Malaysia said, “For the first time, Invest Malaysia will be conducted in thematic series. It has been designed to bring out relevant conversations surrounding Malaysia’s recovery from this unique COVID-19 economic period. The Invest Malaysia series will cover some of the most relevant themes shaping our near-term future, namely Economic Recovery, Infrastructure, Commodities and 5G. Despite the uncertainties, Malaysia’s robust institutional frameworks has allowed our marketplace to remain resilient and will provide the necessary flexibilities to respond to the changing times and needs.”
Datuk Abdul Farid Alias, Group President and CEO of Maybank said, “Conversations at this Invest Malaysia seem to have taken a natural progression towards sustainability and ESG as Covid-19 reminds us of the needs of our other stakeholders - our people, customers, suppliers, government, regulators, communities and also our environment. This is indeed appropriate as we should not only be measured for our returns on financial capital, but also human, social and natural capital. Increasingly, there are other parameters also being applied to our corporate activities - ESG scores being one - to measure our efforts to create profits while delivering on sustainability.”
The Invest Malaysia 2020 conference hosted two additional conversations, with the first featuring Datuk Syed Zaid Albar, Chairman of Securities Commission Malaysia. The second featured Alizakri Alias, Chief EPF Officer of Employees Provident Fund (EPF), Datuk Shahril Ridza Ridzuan, Managing Director of Khazanah Nasional Berhad and Tuan Syed Hamadah Syed Othman, Chief Executive Officer of Kumpulan Wang Persaraan (KWAP).
This is the first in a series of Invest Malaysia 2020 virtual conferences to be held throughout the year. Invest Malaysia 2020 virtual Series 2 will go live 20 July 2020 entitled “Powering Malaysia’s Growth Engines.”
