Bursa Malaysia has always advocated corporate responsibility as key to sustainability. Today, sustainability, which supports stakeholder value creation, should be the main focus of every responsible company.
Tip of the Week: Approximately only 10 percent of every landfill can be cleaned up.
Environmental and social risks and uncertainties will impact companies, and affect investment decisions, consumer behaviour and Government policy to an extent. Companies will take different approaches when measuring the impact of their sustainability activities. They will differ by industry according to the issues faced.
Companies that measure, manage and communicate their social and environmental performance in a robust manner tend to understand how to improve their processes, reduce their costs, comply with regulatory requirements and stakeholder expectations and take advantage of new market opportunities. The process of measuring sustainability impact and sustainability reporting can be complex and there is currently no widely accepted model for assessing the financial value of sustainability contributions to a company.
The most widely used type of sustainability measure is that of input or process, that captures the sustainability effort put in by companies. Good practice companies also adopt output or impact measures to assess the outcome of the sustainability work they do for the community or environment. At the leading edge globally, there are companies and asset managers that seek to place a financial value on the outcome of the sustainability initiatives and derive a positive link to sustainability performance and value creation. At the heart of it, companies must be able to report to shareholders on the relevance and impact of its sustainability initiatives based on the amount spent, that may otherwise flow dividends.
