Environmental Management & Reporting

Overview

Growing awareness and importance of major environmental issues such as climate change, water shortage and biodiversity loss have highlighted the need for environmental management beyond traditional environmental regulatory frameworks. Globally, leading companies have recognised the risks and opportunities related to these issues and have started to measure, manage and report on their environmental impacts beyond regulatory compliance as part of their sustainability reports.

In general, the focus of environmental management for Malaysian companies is regulatory compliance. The Carbon Disclosure Project launched in 2000 encourages worldwide participation for companies to measure and disclose their greenhouse gas emissions and climate change strategies, in order for reduction targets and performance improvements to be made. In 2009, 17 Malaysian companies were invited to participate in the Carbon Disclosure Project. Only one company participated while the others declined to participate or did not respond1.

Corporate Malaysia will need to increase its focus on the environment beyond regulatory compliance if it is to reduce the impacts of potential new regulations on its operations, meet consumer expectations, fulfill investor requirements and remain competitive at a regional and global level.
